Keeping Clean

COVID-19 is an airborne disease that is spread person to person, transmissible by small droplets, aerosols and direct contact. COVID-19 can contaminate surfaces and belongings when infected persons cough, sneeze or touch them. Therefore it is essential that distancing, regular hand washing, good respiratory hygiene, surface cleaning and ventilating indoor spaces is practiced.

As the pandemic progresses, advice regarding COVID-19 changes on a regular basis.

To help protect yourself and others from germs, follow the guidelines below:

1. Wash your hands frequently.

Use soap and water to wash your hands frequently.

The NHS recommends washing your hands for 20 seconds, the time it takes to sing happy birthday twice.

2. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough or sneeze.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough or sneeze. Alternatively, sneeze into your elbow.

Do not cover your nose and mouth with your hands.

The Government now recommends that people aim to wear a face-covering in enclosed spaces where social distancing is not always possible and they come into contact with others that they do not normally meet, such as public transport and some shops.

3. After using a tissue, place in the bin immediately.

Once you have used a tissue, place it straight into the bin.

Do not keep the same tissue and re-use it multiple times.

4. Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell.

Avoiding close contact with people who are unwell will help to prevent spread of infection. This can prevent you from picking up the infection and therefore help you prevent passing it to others.

Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are unclean.

How can I keep surfaces clean?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends taking preventative action that includes regularly cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Surfaces that are frequently touched include door handles, desks, TV remotes and computer keyboards. By the nature of these items, it’s easy to see how infections can spread, as they are likely to be touched by multiple people each day.
